A franquia de Chicago concentra -se na vida profissional e privada dos bombeiros, policiais, pessoal médico de emergência e profissionais do direito que servem a cidade de Chicago. Um tema recorrente e unificador dos quatro shows é o Molly's, um pequeno bar de propriedade de três bombeiros que foram frequentados por personagens de todos os quatro shows. Dick Wolf afirmou que a maioria dos episódios da franquia terminará com uma cena no Molly's, dizendo que "é uma ótima nota no final de todos os shows que conecta todos os shows".

Em 26 de setembro de 2018, a NBC mudou todos os três shows para slots consecutivos na quarta -feira. Em 28 de fevereiro de 2019, a NBC renovou Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. e Chicago Med para a oitava, sétima e quinta temporadas, respectivamente.
